Can I extend my house in BR3?
Beckenham: suburban plots, a town-centre conservation area, and ordinary householder policy. Places in this outward code include Beckenham, Eden Park, Elmers End.
Where character is protected
Beckenham town centre is a conservation area. Many of the residential roads around it are not. In a conservation area, permitted development rights for some alterations are reduced, and the design test is stricter. Outside it, a modest rear extension is often a normal householder application.
BR3 is not a blanket Green Belt district. The useful check is the specific postcode, plus whether the house is in a row where the gap between buildings is part of the character. Bromley’s side-space policy is aimed at that.
This page is about the area, not one house. Order a report for the full postcode. See all areas we cover.
Check with your council. Rules change, and every house is different.
